Proxmox und Container in VM's

Hallo zusammen

LXC Volume disappeared after shutting down proxmox server

Im not entirely sure if this is the correct section to post this thread but I’ll give it a go.

Yesterday I was moving hardware around as I had bought a new router (Mikrotik…that was a learning curve of its own to get everything I wanted running the way I wanted it)

But, in any case I logged into Proxmox to shutdown the system so I could move it. I have an external 1TB SATA SSD connected to system and have an LXC installed on it with 850GB allocated. I left the drive connected when moving...

small LXC + tmpfs + journald with defaults => LXC die with OutOfMemory

Hello All!

I have been experiencing some LXC with small memory allocation stops, randomly dies silently without any trace of cause. Watching over time, I found that the most probably reason is out of memory. Allocating more memory allows it to run longer, but it fails anyway. When I try to find out where the memory lost, I found that "shared" grows and grows until reach OOM condition.

The result my investigation is very courious, follow the sequence:
1. When container starts, it has tmpfs...

VM and DMZ

Hello all,

I installed proxmox on a machine that has two network cards.
One of the cards is used to connect proxmox to my LAN.

I would like to create a DMZ to host CloudFlare tunnel.
I was thinking of creating a DMZ VM and connecting it to the second network card.
The management of DMZ and LAN networks would be done by a pfsense firewall.

Is this a good idea?
I know that the best solution would be to have a dedicated physical machine for the DMZ. But it's for a personal network.

Hi all,

I did a first Proxmox server version with a laptop, setting the ssl certificate with Nginx, and it worked well. Now trying to do the same with a workstation, same process fails.

Error:

Ceph recovery: Wiped out 3-node cluster with OSDs still intact

This 3-node cluster also had a 4th node (r730), which didn't have any OSDs assigned.

This is what I have to recover:-
  • /etc/ceph/ceph.conf and /etc/ceph/ceph.client.admin.keyring available from a previous node that was part of cluster.
  • /var/lib/pve-cluster/config.db file from r730 node

Now, I've 3 proxmox nodes reinstalled, brand new cluster. Now, I want to revive the ceph cluster with existing OSDs.

Overall goal: How can I recover the VM images only? That way, I can...

We are proud to announce the first release of our new integrated import wizard!

Proxmox VE now provides an integrated VM import wizard re-using the storage plugin system for native integration into the API and web-based user interface. You can use this to import VMware ESXi VMs as a whole, with most of its config mapped to Proxmox VE’s config model and reduced downtime.

SSD Migration Options

I've read through all the related posts I can find, and haven't been able to identify a clear path to escape my situation safely.

  • I have an SSD (1.86 TB) that is dying. My whole proxmox install is on this SSD.
  • I have backups of all my VMs on another drive which is safe.
  • I have a full drive image of the ailing SSD.
  • My replacement SSD is 1.82 TB - sadly it is smaller. so I cannot restore the drive image to it, nor do I want to spend more to get a bigger one.
  • Gparted is a...

Copy disk into ceph pool

$

Hi all, I am new to Proxmox, and working on a proof of concept setup. I've set up a couple servers, and ceph. I am working on test-migrating a VM from Virtuozzo to Proxmox.

Is there a way to copy the disk image into the ceph/rbd pool?

I can create a cephfs and access it to copy files there.

However if I create a VM I am only offered the pool or local as storage, but not cephfs.

I feel like I am missing something so would appreciate a pointer, thanks.

ERROR: job failed with err -13 - Permission denied

Googling shows that this error message when backing up is most often associated with LXC container permissions. While I do use LXC containers, this error appears to be exclusively on KVM\QEMU VMs. Some of them were freshly created on Proxmox, while others were migrated from VMWare. I am backing up to a PBS host and using local storage on that host. I do have VMs that were migrated that are backing up just fine. The backups start, but then fail part way through the transfer process.

Can't access internet from VMs in bridge network

Hello, community. I'm rookie at proxmox and not a linux expert also. And English is not my main. So, if I forget to show something important, just ask.

Okay, I have proxmox installed on baremetal. I tried both bridge networking and NAT networking, that's why I have configs for both, that's not an error or misconfig. While NAT mode works perfectly with my VMs, in bridge mode they don't. Every firewall on every point is turned off. Proxmox version: 8.3.3.

Proxmox 8.3 gets hung after few hours

I've installed Proxmox 8.3 on a barebones PC I have. After about 4-6 hours of just letting it run the PC would freeze or get hung and the PC is not responsive forcing me to reboot manually. I've had this PC for about 6 years or more running WIN10 with no freezing issues. I took the PC to my local shop to have hardware checked and everything came back working fine. They installed an older version of Proxmox VE (8.0.3) and the PC ran all weekend no issues. Once I got it back home and ran apt...

Feature request - Memory available is reported instead of mem+cached

Hi,

I've seen that this question comes up in the forums once in a while, people wondering why menory usage in VMs is reported in the Proxmox VE view as over 90% when within the VM the memory usage is reported much lower.

Unused memory is waste so many VM operating systems and configurations will take as much memory as it is given. But looking at threads here in the forums and posts like [1] and [2], it would be much more useful to see how much memory is available (unused + "memory can be...

Deploying apps in lxc or in docker

$

I've been reading some content on this subject, but I'm still not sure I get the advantage of running apps as lxcs vs docker on an lxc. Many people on here and out there on the web are prescribing lxc by default.

As I understand it, the main advantages are:
- easier hardware forwarding
- less performance overhead
- automatic snapshots

The first two are sort of edge cases in my opinion. You frequently don't need that level of performance or hardware. Snapshots are nice, but seem fairly...

VM crashes regularly

Hi, my HomeAssistantOS VM (ID:100) crashes regularly. I can't see any reason in the log.
Enclosed is the log, what exactly does it say? The host is a Lenovo m720q.
Due to the hardware hang in the log, I found the following workaound in the forum. If the workouaund is entered, the crashes are more frequent, but even without the option the VM crashes.

Workaround:
Code:
ethtool -K eno1 tso off gso off

Network card hang-ups.:
Code:

Hello to all,

for yesterday January 9 a backup job is stuck and I cannot stop it or even kill it.
The backup job contains 3 containers and 1 VM. The job started at 03:00:04.
In the back office when I go to 'Task viewer : Backup Job' when I press the button 'Stop' nothing happens.

In the console when I check the vzdump process
Bash:
# ps awxf | grep vzdump

I get the process ID :
Bash:

Poor performance of live migration

Hello!

I have a Proxmox cluster built with 5 nodes. Each of them has a Mellanox ConnectX-4 or 5 network card with 100 Gb/s. The servers are configured identically in terms of network interfaces. On these cards, I have LACP set up, followed by bridges, and VLANs on top of them (I’m attaching a screenshot).

For live migration, I use a dedicated VLAN (bond0.107), where I have configured the network for this specific VLAN along with type=insecure. Nothing else runs over this VLAN...

Using ZFS pool

$

Hi

I'm having a zfs pool RAIDZ1, which includes 4 x 10TB disk. When using this pool in a file server (SMB and NFS) for different purposes, which is better way to share it in LXC or in VM:
  1. mount the whole pool as a one big disk (mp1), and use directory structure to share the resource, like /mnt/disk1, /mnt/disk2, /mnt/disk3, etc.
  2. mount only smaller parts many times, like mp1 (2TB), mp2 (1TB), mp3 (5TB), etc
