AMD vs Intel Performance

Hi there. I would like to know if there is someone that has posted about the above mentioned question. We have to buy a new server for the company and i would like to go with ProxMox and not VMWare, so I would like to know which is better for Virtualization under Proxmox. Maybe some of you ProxMox Gurus can post system configs that you are using currently.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated

Thank you

Hi all,

I have two NIC in my proxmox server, one NIC connet to LAN1 and other NIC connected LAN2.

I want to manage my server trougth LAN1, I have assigned an IP to this interface.
Other interface connect to Laboratori LAN, I don't want this interface assigned IP, but I want some VM navigate througth the laboratory network.

The interface LAN1 only need to manage the server.
The interface LAN2 is connectet to a switch, this switch has configured the VLAN2.

I need configure this:

LAN2 Interface should not have IP.
The VM should be able to navigate through the interface connected to the LAN2.
VM connected to LAN2 can not access or visibility to LAN1

This is posible? Can you help me?

thanks!

Proxmox backups

proxmoxbackup.pngI have set up backups through the Proxmox Backup screen on the web interface using snapshot mode (screenshot attached). I'm backing up to a 1.5TB external USB drive. For smaller VMs, the backups work just fine. For the two large VMs, over 100GB, the backups hang. I was able to get one of the larger vm's to backup using suspend mode, but I would rather use snapshot.

Below is lvs when the backup fails. The backup hangs when snap% 100. The LSize is 100MB in this example, but i've set it as high as 4GB. Same result every time. If I set it higher than 4GB, I get a this error: Insufficient free extents (1023) in volume group pve: 2500 required.

virt0:/etc# lvs

root pve -wi-ao 96.00G
swap pve -wi-ao 15.00G
vzsnap-virt0-0 pve Swi-Io 100.00M data 100.00

Here is lvdisplay when snap% gets to 100.

virt0:/etc# lvdisplay /dev/pve/vzsnap-virt0-0

Any ideas how to get the backup to work in snapshot mode? What exactly is snap% and why is it getting to 100?

Thanks!

Console Login

I just started using Proxmox about a month ago and am slowly learning. I recently upgrade my two servers to Proxmox VE 2.2, but I am using my template from 2.1 that i created. I noticed that there is no console login on the newer version. I searched and tried a few suggestions like, editing inittab, which wasn't even created.

Is there a way for me to logon to the console with my old template? I currently use vzctl enter command from putty, but a few other users could benefit from the console logon.

Thanks.

Console Logon

I recently upgrade from Proxmox VE 2.1 to 2.2. I noticed there were some changes in the new version and it won't allow console logon without editing the inittab.

I am trying to use the template I created for 2.1 and need the console logon for a few users that maintain Proxmox. I tried editing inittab and didn't even see it under the /etc directory.

How can I enable console logon without having to recreate my template?

Thanks.

Where are the logs that show the actual QM Create command for example? I see the results in the var/log/pve folder but not the actual commands issued

Mac virtual client

I have been trying and trying and must now acknowledge my ignorance.
I can't seem to be able to create a Mac OS virtual machine.
Every time I try to boot the setup from the DVD I get the same error message.
Can't boot from the DVD error 0004.
I have tested the media on MacPro workstation and it works fine.

Any ideas?

GFS2 on iscsi access from several VMs?

$

I need a bit of clarification. I've never worked with concurrent file systems but this seems the best way to solve my problems.
My objective is to share files via GFS2 between several VMs, the file system should exist on an iscsi target. It would make sense to me that iscsi be handled by proxmox instead of configuring it on every VM, then I could create an lvm volume on top of it and finally GFS2.
So I'd share the iscsi target, the lvm vg, lv and finally the file system between VMs, across 2 hosts.
Is this sound? Will the way proxmox ve handles iscsi and lvm interfere in some way?
Any insight is appreciated.

You should consider lengthening the forum login timeout to serveral hours instead of the short time it is now.

FreeBSD from VMWare to Proxmox.

I'm trying to find out how to fix some of the issues that we have with one of our migrations.
Moving from VMWare to Proxmox is straight forward but trying to get the BSD based VM to boot afterwards is not.
It seems to loose (or change) its drive properties along the way and this causes the VM to boot with Read Only filesystem.

Does anyone have enough experience with BSD to help?

Blackberry Enterprise express

Hi,
I've installed blackberry enterprise server express on a Windows KVM. From what I understand, I need to connect the blackberry to the server for the initial configuration. I've tried both RDP passthrough and connected the blackberry to my proxmox server and used usb passthrough to the KVM but no luck.

Has anyone had success with adding blackberries to a BES server inside of a KVM?

thanks

Request: How to for Installation to >3tb Drive

I hope this finds everyone well.
I am trying to find what is the best way to install Proxmox onto a drive array that has over 2+TB of storage.

I have a bunch of 3TB Drives that I would love to install Proxmox onto.
The hope is of course to use my ISCSI raid array for the actual VM's however these drives make for excellent storage (thinking images, backups etc)

Sadly - When I do the install I am stuck with a screen saying "Grub Loading. Welcome to Grub!" on boot.

I am a little bit educated in Linux - and I am reading that ever since the Linux 2.6.3x series kernels are quite capable of dealing with UEFI in fact grub2 has UEFI support.
I know that Grub 2 is available in the debian upstream repositories - but I am stuck trying to do an install out of the box (from the ISO)

Especially for those systems on which I am a bit remote from and only have a remove kvm access (thus loading a virtual CD rom)

Does anyone have a how-to-do that would make it very easy ( thinking Installing Proxmox on a 3TB drive for Dummies here) something perhaps I can copy/paste ?

I am assuming I could simply build the drive breakout prior to boot - splitting it up perhaps - however I am not sure - so figured I would ask

suspend VM to take snapshot

Hi, the question is not very critical but interesting for me. I have planned the backup of some KVM VM's on a proxmox ve 2.2 server. Backup mode is snapshot (VM's reside on LVM). The backups are OK but two of the machines (the same ones) are backed up with suspend. I see in the backup log the message "suspend VM to take snapshot". Then I see "resume VM" and then "VM is online again after 2 seconds."
Why have these two VM's to be suspended to make snapshot?
Is it possible to change something inside the VMs OS to make them backup without suspend? These VM's are running Windows Server 2003R2.

Serial port passthrough in a HA environment / HA priorisation question

$

Hey folks,

I did not find any information about serial port passthrough for Proxmox VE 2.x, only for 1.X. But as a special addition, what about a serial port passthrough in a HA environment?

Here's the scenario:

We run Webresetters made by ICO (see webresetter.de), the TKS hub is accessed via serial port. We want to migrate that server to a virtual HA platform. I think the serial port should work like in PVE 1.x, but what about the HA part? When Host1 goes down, Host2 will take over the VMs on Host2, but then the serial port will be offline or not connected. I never saw serial Y cables :)

Is there any way to priorise virtual machines, so when Host1 is available the virtual machine with the virtual serial port connected to the physical serial port on Host1 should run on Host1 and not on Host2? I think we can live with the downtime of the serial port when Host1 goes down for updates, hardware maintenance etc.

Thanks for any information and/or ideas.

"ERROR: can't do online migration - VM uses local disks" on shared storage

Hi,

Slowly building my first production PVE HA cluster (2 node), I solved all the troubles I faced up to now (and learned _a_lot_ on this road !) but I'm breaking my teeth on the last I'm struggling with :'(

Nodes (pve01 and pve02, HP ML350, up to date PVE 2.2), network (2xGbEth bond0/vmbr0 for the LAN, 2xGbEth direct links bond1/vmbr1 w/ jumbo frames for storage), storage (HW RAID, LVM VG on DRBD on LVM LV) are setup, cluster is created and nodes are joined, fencing (domain and ipmilan devices) is configured and barely tested. Only qdisk left to be configured.

About the storage configuration
Code:

2xIntel 520 240Gb SSDs
\_HP SA P410 w/ 512M FBWC RAID1 array with accelerator disabled as recommended by HP
\_ /dev/sda3 configured as LVM physical volume
\_ vgpve01vms: LVM VG for virtual machines storage
\_ lvdrbd0vm101: DRBD backing LV for VM 101 (for resizable DRBD devices etc.)
\_ drbd0: Pri/Pri DRBD device dedicated to VM 101 (for isolated DRBD mgmt of each VM)
\_ vgdrbd0vm101: "vm101" PVE _shared_ storage (dedicated to VM 101)
              \_ vm-101-disk-1: VM 101 KVM disk device configured as "virtio0: vm101:vm-101-disk-1"

VM 101 is a KVM W7 VM configured as follow:
Code:

bootdisk: virtio0
cores: 2
cpu: host
keyboard: fr
memory: 2048
name: wseven
net0: virtio=8E:CA:D1:58:82:A0,bridge=vmbr0
ostype: win7
sockets: 1
virtio0: vm101:vm-101-disk-1

DRBD is working nicely through its dedicated network.
Code:

0: cs:Connected ro:Primary/Primary ds:UpToDate/UpToDate C r-----
    ns:21734972 nr:0 dw:13289664 dr:131091039 al:2372 bm:1298 lo:0 pe:0 ua:0 ap:0 ep:1 wo:b oos:0

Network configuration seems stable and well performing according to iperf.
PVE storage configuration seems all right and is coherent on both nodes. "vm101" VG is actually marked as shared and available to nodes pve01 and pve02 in storage.cfg on both servers:
Code:

lvm: vm101
        vgname vgdrbd0vm101
        shared
        content images
        nodes pve01,pve02

VM starts, runs, stops and is backep up (to RDX) smoothly...

BUT I can't migrate it because of the following error:
Code:

1443 Dec 14 12:02:26 starting migration of VM 101 to node 'pve02' (192.168.100.20)
1444 Dec 14 12:02:26 copying disk images
1445 Dec 14 12:02:26 ERROR: Failed to sync data - can't do online migration - VM uses local disks
1446 Dec 14 12:02:26 aborting phase 1 - cleanup resources
1447 Dec 14 12:02:26 ERROR: migration aborted (duration 00:00:00): Failed to sync data - can't do online migration - VM uses local disks
1448 TASK ERROR: migration aborted

I may have made a mistake, but I really can't see which one as this worked on my PoC setup (that I sadly can't access ATM :'( ) This PoC was built exactly the same way (LVM VG on DRBD on LVM LV on Soft RAID) and live migration of (W$, Linux, FreeBSD) VMs was working without a hitch.

But The Beast keep telling me I'm using local disks and I can't possibly figure out why ?!
The only suspect I can think of is CLVM which I'd have supposed to be running... but is not. As the few relevant mentions of it (replacing PVE's own lock mechanism in v2 on one side, and only needed in v2 in rare circumstances on the other) seem a little contradictory to me, I thought I'd better ask for enlightenment before struggling further.

Thank you in advance for your answers and comments.
Time for a recomforting 12 year ol' bram...
Have a nice WE

node reboots after being fenced and rgmanager crashes

$

Hello,

I've set up two-node HA cluster with qdisk (3 votes quorum) using a managed switch as fence_ifmib agent. Everything works great so far except there's a little inconvinience: any time a node gets fenced it reboots about in a minute (one time).
The bad thing here is that I've got my qdisk (which is an iSCSI target) automatically attached at startup which, of course, cannot be done when the node is fenced. At startup, it gets "quorum dissolved" message and strangely after that rgmanager stops and I cannot manually start it without qdisk - it crashes immediately.

So, to reanimate a fenced node I need to:
1) ssh to the alive node and execute
Code:

fence_node -U node2
2) ssh to the dead node and manually connect iSCSI device by iscsiadm (or reboot the machine for doing this at startup)
3) on the second node execute
Quote:

/etc/init.d/cman reload
. After that rgmanager starts succesfully.

That's not a hard thing to do but I'm still surprised why it happens at all. Why rgmanager cannot run without qdisk? (I've got just my pvevm's in cluster.conf <rg> section) What if suddenly my qdisk device dies and both rgmanager services on both nodes will crash simultaneously? Why there's a reboot at all, can I disable it and let a fenced node stay calm and alive waiting for examination and fence_node -U node2?
I thought there might be a problem with "allow_kill="1" in cluster.conf qdisk section, but I tried both 1 and 0, the outcome seems to be the same.

Thanks.

Hello guys please i am trying to virtualize a physical server to proxmox....the server is running sbs 2008
server and i have followed the installation instruction here.
http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Migratio..._to_Proxmox_VE
the clonezilla approach ...But after cloning the server and booting it up....it continued having blue screens....

please am do i need to do this line below for sbs 2008?
prepare the source host, make sure that you have standard IDE drivers enabled (for winxp/win2003 just use the mergeide.reg, for w2k I followed this link (solution 2 worked for me)....

Hi all,

Using proxmox since 2 months and want to make backups but need space...so i follow procedure to reduce the size of the LVM /dev/mapper/pve-data

but now

mount /dev/mapper/pve-data /var/lib/vz
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/pve-data,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
