pipe not available with java console on

I am a new proxmox user , I created 2 Vms (Windows 2008, Debian squeeze). Thanks to tutorials, it was quite fast to create.
But when I tried to use my Vms, I was not able to type 'pipe' character in any terminal.
Any idea about this issue, I am using the baremetal installation proxmox 2.1.1.
