tar.lzo backups will not restore in PVE4 Beta

$

Hi

I have a PVE 4 Beta installation in test at the moment.
I have a handful of non-critical LXC guests running on there. I have been backing them up to a remote NFS mount using LZO compression.
After a power failure I am trying to restore one of the tar.lzo backups. When I select it in the NFS storage an hit the restore button it does nothing. Restoring a tar.gz gives me the usual restore dialog box but I get nothing for the tar.lzo backups.

I have extracted the lzo file and I can see the file structure of the backed up LX container so I assume the backup is OK.
I have tried to restore using vzrestore but I get 'command not found'. Is that not included with PVE4 or is there a different tool for LXC?

As an alternative is there a way to convert the tar in the backup to for example a .raw disk format so I can mount that as a container?

thanks for any suggestions?

proxmox/multiple hypervisors and associated storage configuration on home server

I'm totally new to virtualization (and to linux ;) )
and some of my questions may be stupid ;) but would
appreciate if someone could take a look at my ideas
below and give a pointer ahead of time
so to speak in order for me to do a sensible installation.

The server will be used for learning about virtualization,
various OSs (Win/Linux) and for programming/graphics.

I've got the following hardware:
-Lenovo TS140 server , XEON e3-1246-v3 , 2*1TB HDD, 1*256GB SSD, 20GB memory,
1 single Intel nic, 1 quad Intel nic.
-1TB WD NAS
-A few old pcs eg pentium 3, 4, with HDDs
-core 2 duo laptop
-beaglebone

I don't need/want RAID, so I shut it off on the server disks.
I initially thought of using one of the two HDD in the server + the NAS for backup
and the other HDD + SSD for the VMs etc. (the not so near future plan is to have a separate
very low power file server for back up together with the NAS - don't want
to destroy the backup/data while learning ;) )

Few questions
(a)As far as I understand proxmox can't be run off a USB stick like
ESXI / must be installed on disk - is this correct ?.
(b)Does proxmox really need to take over the entire disk / how would
the 1 TB HDD & 256 GB SSD best be used with proxmox (usage/partitioning etc.)?
(c)I understand ESXI can be tried inside of proxmox - is it possible to
install both separately to somehow "multi boot" ?

Backup stays not the same

Hi,

If I backup an offline VM (no compression) twice, the backup files are not identical. For a 1.8 GB VM (Jessie) the difference is only 313 KB, but why is there a difference at all?

$ ls -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 4294967294 wheel 1557838848 Sep 2 18:06 vzdump-qemu-3019-2015_09_02-18_04_41.vma
-rw-r--r-- 1 4294967294 wheel 1557838848 Sep 2 20:10 vzdump-qemu-3019-2015_09_02-20_09_12.vma

$ time cmp -l vzdump-qemu-3019-2015_09_02-18_04_41.vma vzdump-qemu-3019-2015_09_02-20_09_12.vma > cmp_3019_18_04_41-20_09_12

$ ls -l cmp_3019_18_04_41-20_09_12
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 331529 Sep 2 21:44 cmp_3019_18_04_41-20_09_12

Any clues?

Best,
Andreas

Resize /dev/mapper/pve-root & rootfs

Like the topic I would like to resize rootfs and the pve-root folders due to they don't use much space and I would like to give that
space to /dev/mapper/pve-data instead.

rootfs 28G 1.2GB(used) 25G(available) 5%(use%) /
/dem/mapper/pve-root 28G 1.2GB(used) 25G(available) 5%(use%) /

I've googled some but I don't find any good explanation how I will do this. Is rescue CD only option to resize or can I do it via command line?

Best reagards!

Proxmox with SAN

Hi everybody,
I'm going to install proxmox on one node with a FC SAN (I would like to add another node in future), but I just have some concerns about which storage backend to use.

I really like ZFS and I would like to use it on my SAN, but I don't have RAM to give it and I'd prefer to use my SAN's RAID and caching functionality.
Is this supported somehow? (eg. create a pool with a SAN LUN only, and setting zfs arc_limit to 0 ...)
How about performance?

If not, is there an alternative to ZFS which gives me, at least, the possibility to:
  • take snapshots
  • have a separate volume for each VM disk
  • create thin provisioned disks
  • add another node

I already tried with LVM, but it lacks for thin provisioning support....

Thanks

Upgrade server from no-subscription to enterprise

Hi,
I have two question:

  1. I would like to upgrade my server from a current 3.1-114 to a more recent 3.4-160 (enterprise). Is it possibile to achieve this without reboot the server? (this is a node of a 2-node cluster, the main node in the following point) How can I proceed?
  2. I would like to upgrade another server (this is the master node of the previous 2-node cluster) with 3.4-160 currently pve-no-subscription to a enterprise subscription, without reboot the server. How can I proceed?

Thanks in advance

Guest Install Issues on Proxmox 4.0

Started some testing with Proxmox 4.0 as it looks pretty sweet. Every was going fantastic until I went to install a CentOS 6.6 VM. I am hitting this exact issue except I don't run a Dell array, its a Nimble iSCSI array.

https://access.redhat.com/solutions/1175843

Using anything else other than cache=none works and the VM installs. Trying to determine if this is a known bug/issue. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Unable to re-mount /proc in Proxmox 3 containers?

$

Recently I discovered that the default /proc mount inside CentOS containers running under Proxmox 3.1 were mounted insecurely:

# mount|grep " /proc"
proc on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)

Under older versions of Proxmox, I was able to correct this by running:

mount -o remount,nosuid,noexec /proc

However, when running under Proxmox 3.1, the above returns:

mount: mount failed

Anyone here aware of a fix for this?

Thanks,

Curtis

tun devices in ve 4 (lxc)

What is the 'proxmox way' of adding a tun device to an lxc container on boot?

I tried putting "lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 10:200 rwm" in the config for the container, but the gui was pretty upset about that, said it was an invalid key. I currently have a mknod stuffed in the openvpn init script of the container, but I'm hoping there's a far cleaner way.

Best practices partitoning proxmox 3.4 on OVH Server

$

Hi all,
I'm going to install a new proxmox s3.4 on OVH server, to avoid configuration errorcould anyone confirm the best HD partition?

Scenario:
Infrastructure Server 32GB RAM - 3 300GB SSD SoftRaid -
Intel Xeon E5
E5-1630v3
4/8t
3,7 / 3,8 GHz
32 GB RAM
DDR4 ECC 2133 MHz
NAS 1GB

The server will host 4 VZ CT (daily VZdump snapshot on NAS)
---------------------------------
The OVH wizard suggests:

# Type File system Mount point LVM volume name Raid Parttion dimension Used space
1 primary Ext3 / - 1 20.0 GB 60.0 GB
2 primary Swap swap - - 3 x 1.0 GB 3.1 GB
3 lv Ext3 /var/lib/vz data 1 279.0 GB 836.9 GB

In the past I had some backup problems related to snapshot and VZdump (not enough space to snapshot) and I had to change the partition dimension after installation.
This time I would avoid future problems.

Any tip about the best practices?
thanks
(Yes, I have active subscription)

cluster troubleshooting guide? empty in cluster config?

Can someone well versed in the pve cluster stack please write a cluster troubleshooting guide?

in http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/168...6859#post86859
Quote:

Oh, seems you did not configured rgmanager - there is no 'rm' section in your cluster config?

Try to add an empty config "<rm></rm>"
maybe, by default this should start with "<rm/>"

when i did my test, i had to start rgmanager by hand. (ansible makes it easy to do this to all nodes at the same time)

What happens if the resource does not exist? when i deleted the one HA vm, its entry was still in rm section of HA config. in /var/log/syslog, i saw
Code:

Sep  4 06:51:28 prox1 rgmanager[20704]: [pvevm] VM 101 does not exist
but nothing that looked like more attempts to start this non existant vm. deleting its entry replaced it with "<rm/>" and that seems to keep things happy.

Assign virtual public IP directly onto an interface on Proxmox container.

I have a pfSense router which has multiple subnets of IPs routed to it. My Proxmox is a client to pfSense and has obtained IP of 192.168.4.3 - all containers made by Proxmox have Bridgemode so they obtain IPs like 192.168.4.5, 192.168.4.6 and so on. I use Outbound Manual NAT on pfSense to send request from container through a specific public IP to outside. I use NAT forward to send inbound request through pfSense to Proxmox containers.

This gives the illusion as if container has the public IP assigned to it. But it doesn't. And that is my problem now. I want to be able to assign the virtual public IP that is now on pfSense directly onto an interface on Proxmox container. I like to avoid vlans on all ends. I am not able to connect more physical ports either (run out of it). I am open to use the public IP address through bridge mode. Is this possible? If yes, how? Thanks
